Mountain of Poisonous Plants


Sandakphu located inside the Singalila National park in Darjeeling is the highest Peak in West Bengal, almost near the border of Nepal. You will witness a collection of Cobra Lily in the mountain, and because of these poisonous plants, the place is also known as the 'Mountain of poisonous plants. Jabari is the starting point of Trekking. One has to cover a distance of approx. 77 kilometers of trekking on both sides. The trekking level is moderate in Sandakphu. The highest point in Sandakphu is 3,636 meters. It is recommended to have a proper pair of trekking shoes. You can also carry spare batteries because you will not find electricity facilities while trekking. 

 

From Manebhajan it will take three days to cover the distance of 32 kilometers to reach Sandakphu. Professional trekkers can cover this distance in two days. It is advised to carry a water bottle with you as you will get the chance to refill water stock with natural stream flow water while trekking. 

 

For camping, you can carry your own tent houses. However, you will also come across some guest houses and homestays.

Autumn is also considered the best time to visit Sandakphu. Autumn arrives in October and stays till November in Sandakphu. The average temperature during these months ranges between 8 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees Celsius. Autumn is the best time for sightseeing the beauty of Kanchenjunga, Everest, and other peaks. 

 

Sandakphu welcomes a chilly winter from December and lasts up to February. The average temperature during these months ranges between 1 degree Celsius to 7 degrees Celsius. The weather during winter in Sandakphu remains extremely chilled. You can also enjoy the stunning snowfall from the end of December. 

 

It is advised not to plan your trip during winter if you are planning to take children and old members with you because of the extreme cold.  Summer and Autumn are perfect for planning family trips. Even during the Summer season and Autumn trips carry regular woolen clothes with you because the nights can be extremely chilly in Sandakphu.
