Itinerary toward Monastery

From Guwahati the journey begins, Tezpur is 181 km away, and it will take about 4 hours to reach Tezpur.

From Tezpur, one needs to hire that place transport. Tourists also use shared vehicles like buses and Jeeps which are easily available in Guwahati. But shared vehicles consume a lot of time, shared vehicles don't have a single specified destiny, they stop at various places for passengers. And because of it, it takes 6 hours or sometimes more to drop you at Tezpur.

After Reaching Tezpur, the next station will be Bhalukpong. The distance between Tezpur and Bhalukpong is 60 km, which will take about 2 hours. The main journey begins from Tezpur. Bhalukpong is a small town near the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. At the border visitor's ILPs are checked. After crossing the Assam - Arunachal Pradesh border you will enter a forested area. Visitors pass the rest of the road in the forested area under the supervision of military personnel, because that area is a little bit risky. Wild elephants roam around the jungle and sometimes visit the main road also, which is very dangerous for visitors and travelers.

You can take a rest after reaching Bhalukpong. There are many places to visit in Bhalukpong. Jia Bharali is a small Rocky river, you can spend time sitting on the banks of the river that will make you feel refreshed.  Kameng is the local name of the river; especially people of Arunachal Pradesh call the river by this name. You can also visit the Tipi Orchid Centre which is famous for the flora reserve of Arunachal Pradesh. If you have enough time, Nameri National Park is also a good place to witness the world of fauna. The Jia Bharali River is also connected to the reserve.

From Bhalukpong the next stoppage will be Dirang which is 140 km distant from Bhalukpong.  This will take more time than the previous journey. The weather will get cooler now. The surroundings will be natural and green and a lot of waterfalls will come on the way. After the journey of 5 hours passing Sangti valley will visit Dirang. Dirang is a small village where proper shops, markets, and accommodation facilities are available. The people of Dirang have the common occupation of kiwi farms. You can explore the village, the people, their culture, Sangti Valley, and farms as well. Besides these, Khastung Gompa, Dirang River, Dirang Dzong. Thubsung Dhargyeling Monastery is a must-visit place if you are staying in Dirang for some days. The whole monastery is very picturesque and represents their culture which is also a good place to get deep knowledge about them.

Now the destination is 135 km away, which will take about 5-6 hours depending on the speed. One should leave Dirang early in the morning because the weather at Sela Pass gets worse after 12. Especially if you are going by a two-wheeler, visitors face problems with low visibility and strong cold winds. Before reaching Sela, there is a kind of Zigzag road, which becomes a little complicated to navigate.

The Grand Sela Gate of Tawang will be welcoming you, numerous prayer flags will be flickering in the air. Near the grand gate, there is an army canteen from where you can have free tea or coffee. You can spend time on the bank of Sela Lake, which is just beyond the Sela Gate. 20 Km from Sela Pass Jaswant Garh is situated. It is the memorial of the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the sino-Indian war. Jaswant Rawat was one of them and is worshipped there as a god.

After the journey of around 500 Km, you will finally reach the destination, Tawang. The place is influenced mainly by Tibetan culture. Tawang house is the largest monastery in India. It will take up half of your day to explore the whole monastery properly. You can also visit Urgelling Monastery, Samten Yongcha Monastery, and Tawang War Memorial.

If you want to explore more in Tawang, you can visit Madhuri Lake. The real name of Madhuri Lake is Sangestar Tso. The Lake is very picturesque. One of the movie songs of Madhuri Dixit and SRK was shot there, from then the lake is more famous as the name Madhuri Lake.

April to May is considered the best time to visit Tawang. During these months, the temperature ranges from 5 to 22 degrees. It is the summer season but still, you will get to witness snowfall.

Tawang welcomes monsoon from June to September. Traveling between these months is risky because of high rainfall and landslides.

Visiting from late September to October is also a good choice most of the Tawang festivals take place during this month.

November to March is the time to visit Tawang. The whole Tamang is covered with ice. One will not be able to see major attractions because of high snowfall.
